Can you remember what television was like before Netflix? I sure can’t. From what I gather, families would gather together on tuesday nights to watch their 20 minuet show before heading to bed. Sitcoms were the main form of television. If we look way back at The Andy Griffith Show, or more recently, Friends, each episode is not really connected. There are some consistencies, but if you had a meeting scheduled at the same time as the time your favorite show aired, you would not be missing all too much. You would just wait a week and would be back on track. Due to the introduction of Netflix, the whole nature of television shows has changed. I was watching Pam and Jim’s wedding on the show The Office, and my parents contemplated on when the episode aired. Because they had been watching the show for years rather than a few months, the wedding was so much more exciting and impactful. They had been waiting for so much longer for this to happen, and it was a major event in pop culture. Now, due to the aid of Netflix, you can binge watch any show in one sitting. This has totally changed to course of television. No one wants to binge watch sitcoms, it’s so much more exciting to watch a story unfold, rather than watch seemingly meaningless episodes. Shows like Stranger Things capture this need. The show in its entirety is essentially a very long movie, broken up into episodes. This makes it so much more exciting and captivating to watch. Feeling mystique and intrigue, while still having access to the next episode, not having to wait a whole week to watch the next episode. Show writers have to totally chang their technique in order to appease to those watching their shows on Netflix. And that is how Netflix has changed the world of television.
I am a constant user of Spotify, but my cheap self does not have Spotify Premium. The defaults of not having Spotify Premium are not being able to pick the song you listen to, not having your music downloaded, and of course, advertisements. Most of these ads are for Spotify Premium, and these ads are so annoying. Sometimes, I have to leave the room when these ads come on. At first, I just thought that Spotify was just bad at advertising, and that the ads were really annoying. Then my music would turn back on, and I wouldn’t think much else of it. After we began analyzing ads, I realized the genius of these insanely annoying ads. People are so much more likely to pay to get rid of ads when the ads are so bad that can’t even be listened to. These ads are bad on purpose so that people will pay for Spotify Premium, and get rid of them. When people hear “no ad interruptions” at the end of a painful ad, it doesn’t even matter what else was said about Spotif...
